Youngstown Jiu Jitsu Classes
BJJ - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art that was made famous in UFC 1 by the legendary Royce Gracie. Gracie used his Jiu-Jitsu to take down all of his opponents and submit them by choke or joint lock. What made this so amazing was that Gracie was out-weighed, out-muscled and out-sized by all of his opponents. In fact, Gracie weighed a mere 170 lbs while some of his opponents were well over 250 lbs, but that did not stop Gracie from doing what he was trained to do - clinch, take down, control and submit.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed to promote the idea that a smaller and weaker individual, with the use of proper technique and leverage, can defeat an opponent much larger and stronger than them by taking the fight to the ground and submitting their adversary by way of choke or joint lock. This is what Gracie set out to prove in the early UFC's when he did exactly that.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be trained for sport, self-defense or MMA. At Next Level Martial Arts we believe that it's important to train all three of these aspects, because each one plays a huge part in the overall development of the BJJ practitioner.
Do You Have Classes For Beginners?
Yes, we have classes for beginners. One of the biggest mistakes you'll see most schools make is that they throw everybody together regardless of what skill level they're at. There are many problems with this. To begin with, the beginner is not being taught the basic, foundational techniques of Jiu-Jitsu that are critical for their development. They're also trying to mentally process and implement techniques and body movements that are far too advanced for their stage of development. This would be equivalent to teaching a kindergartner Algebra when they don't even know how to add or subtract yet. This approach to teaching is equally detrimental to the intermediate and advanced student who need content that is suitable to their stage of development. By the time a student has reached the intermediate and advanced stage of their development they should be learning a set of techniques that are building upon the basics that they've been taught.
At Next Level Martial Arts we divide students into two groups; beginners are in one group with intermediate and advanced students in another group. Each group has their own instructor that is responsible for teaching them a curriculum that matches their skill level. A beginner never has to worry about feeling incompetent or unable to perform a certain set of techniques because they will be learning techniques that are suitable for their skill level.
What can I expect from a typical Jiu-Jitsu class?
The first 15 minutes of class is spent warming up and preparing your mind and body for the technical and practical components of class. During this time students will participate in drills, body movements and exercises that have a direct relationship to the art itself. After the warm up is complete the instructor will lead his students in what is considered the instructional/didactic portion of class. The instructor will demonstrate a series of techniques from a certain position and then have the class practice the said techniques. The time devoted to this section of class is anywhere from 30-45 minutes. After that the instructor will have his students devote the remainder of the time to one of three things; reflex development drills, positional rolling or free rolling.
